Season in review
James (a.k.a Boss), we still love you! Cheers to a season full of
highs and lows, arguments, disagreements, laughter and loads of Benedetto
spirit. The important thing was to learn from it and no one would
disagree we have learnt a lot about being sponsored, playing under
pressure to perform, being judged on our results, being responsible
for the team and our own actions and most importantly placing the
Team above everything else. The results on paper
are nothing to shout about, but this maiden season was always going
to be more about learning, experimenting and making choices about
what is ultimately best for the team. The brotherhood was priceless,
the team spirit shown was one to be cherished, built on and never
to be taken for granted. Not to forget the beer and liquor.. "Wah
lao, don't waste!" -Jo, Captain "We want
to be remembered as the team who gave their all whenever they were
on the pitch; the team where everyone had an individual commitment
to a team effort, and that is what's going to make this team succeed."
Words will never be enough to describe the emotions filled yet simple
sunday football games. The joys and hurts, the effort put in to have
a Team, the passion and spirit
that keeps a bunch of boys sticking it through together - some spend
their lifetime figuring it out. Here at Benedetto United, we are The
Blessed Ones because we tried hard to figure that out and succeeded,
with everyone's contribution. Everyone of you who wear the colours
of Benedetto week in week out and who carved the team into your hearts.
I only have two words now to close this small little chapter of a
long road ahead for Benedetto United F.C - Onwards Benedetto!
P/s: I forgot i was assigned to write a match report.

Similar to the previous meeting between
the two teams, it was a tight encounter with both teams coming into
the game with a careful game plan. Bishannite was eager to revenge
their thrashing in the last game against Benedetto while Benedetto
was going all out, hoping to chalk up the points to keep up the pressure
on the teams above them.
Shots on goals were far and few between in the first half, with both
defenses coming out tops and most of the battles being fought in the
middle of the park. The dead lock was broken in the 30th minute, the
referee awarded Bishannite a debatable penalty. Bishannite’s
striker was chasing down a long ball and with James’s slightest
touch, if any at all, he flew to the floor. The referee hesitated
but blew the whistle for the penalty after much thought. The penalty
taker coolly slotted the spot kick onto Aaron’s right side.
1-0 at half time.
Benedetto came out all guns blazing in the second half, controlling
and dictating the pace and play of the game. Bishannite was kept in
their half for large periods. We failed to convert our chances but
the perfect opportunity came when Wang Di was felled in the box. The
same player stood up to take the spot kick he earned. He beat the
goalkeeper but not the post. Benedetto United could have easily taken
the easier way out, feeling sorry for themselves and conceding that
it was just not their day. But the players fought on, piling on the
pressure and allowing no relief for the Bishannite players. A late,
cynical tackle was made on our vice-captain, Wei Jun, and there was
a heated exchange of words between him and the defender. The situation
was kept under control until their goalkeeper decided to take the
situation into his own hands and landed a punch on Wei Jun. Fortunately,
several of our opponents were sporting enough to try and calm down
their own players and prevented any more trouble. He was duly sent
off, a pity for such an ugly action of a single individual to stain
an otherwise competitively fought but fair competition.
A fighting display from Benedetto’s boys, never gave up and
credit to all for keeping their cool and focus. It was evident to
see, everyone in the team had only one sole and similar goal –
victory. Nothing else matters, enjoying football and winning games
in the process of it, that is the sole and most important goal of
Benedetto United. The fight and determination was there for all to
see, keep up the effort and spirit brothers, Onwards Benedetto!

Even before the game, our mindset was dent
on revenging our last defeat inflicted by Team Inpulse. Wang Di was
on the sub’s bench while the starting line up was about the
same. We got the game moving once the whistle was blown, the pace
of the game played at high intensity. The first breakthrough was through
a corner where the cross was low and swerving, it caused a major defensive
mix-up even though did not look like there was any danger. Their striker
got free and slotted home by poking the ball at the near post leaving
Aaron stranded on the ground.
Noel and Wei Jun played effective short passes while Ted was protecting
the backline as a defensive midfielder. Moments later, Noel passed
a through ball to Wei Jun whom lobbed the ball over the last man for
Desmond. Even though he was the lone striker up front, he overcome
the defense with a few tricks up his sleeves, flicking over the first
defender and turned pass the second with composure, He blasted his
shot into the far right corner of the net with much precision. Definitely
one of the best goals we have seen this season, Desmond once again
proving his worth to the team.
Time was running out in the first half with both teams fighting hard,
our defense broke down again due to an error. 2-1, the first half
ended with both teams physically drained. It was more of a mental
and physical battle than anything else.
Team Inpulse spent the second camping in their own half as Benedetto
laid siege on their goal. Benedetto played a high backline and threw
players forward at any opportunity. This meant there was always going
to be holes at the back and Inpulse exploited it to maximum effect,
3-1. Benedetto continued its positive mentality and had several shots
on goal, but it was all too little too late when Yash ended his goal
drought, drilling in a Zhong He cross towards the end of the game.
The game ended with that, the score 3-2. Benedetto’s defensive
display has left much to be desired, failing to meet the high standards
that they set themselves. With a wake up call, Benedetto’s backline
can, and will perform much better than this. Onwards Benedetto!

The match started with possession and constant
flows of attacks from Benedetto. Things were pretty one sided for
the 1st 15 minutes of the game. Soon Noel made the break through,
teasing the defenders and goalkeeper, before placing the ball into
the net. The goal served a wake up call to Soccer Sonix and they started
mounting attacks at Benedetto, but the defence was keeping their attackers
at bay. A very good chance came Soccer Sonix’s way, which beat
the offside trip of Benedetto on the right flank. Wei Liang had to
make a late tackle to stop their attack, resulting in a yellow card.
As the game progress in the first half, it poured. Making vision a
problem for Aaron, he went on the game without glasses. Then came
a corner from the left, an in swinger that Aaron missed, having James
to keep the line in the pool of players. But James miskicked the ball
and cleared it forward instead of bringing it to safety, only for
the midfielder to pick it up and cross it in for a soft header from
the striker. Soon after, Kah Yeu earned a free kick just slightly
before the halfway line. An unlikely goal scorer, Jaemes took the
free kick, perhaps seeing the keeping off the line, pumping the ball
flowing right into the net, leaving the Sonix’s goalkeeper helpless.
At half time, the score line was 2 – 1 in favour of Benedetto.
During the team talk at halftime, Jaemes and Josiah mistakes were
pointed out mistakes and asked for an even better showing in the second
half. Going into the second half, heads lifted high and morale was
good. Benedetto continued their attack in the search of a third goal
to secure their lead. Hardworking Desmond made an immediate impact
shortly after coming on, making his sizzling run from the left to
the centre, past the defenders and shooting the ball hard and low,
giving the goalkeeper absolutely no chance. Soccer Sonix sent in their
speedy and hardworking striker who was to be the main character of
their fight back. Their effort paid off after much trying, a through
ball that beat the offside trap. As the striker pressed on, Aaron
hesitated to come further out and narrow the angle, the striker calmly
placed the ball past Aaron’s left.
With the score at 3 – 2, Josiah came into the game together
with Wei Liang and John was switched out to the right, in search of
a 4th goal to nail the win. But things didn’t go Benedetto’s
way. With 5 minutes left on the clock, Soccer Sonix once again found
the loophole in defence. Their striker pushing his way through, brushing
Jaemes aside, who was still recovering from his injury. Even as the
last line of defence, Aaron, was rushing to salvage something, once
again the striker calmly placed the ball passed into an open goal.
Benedetto almost found the net in the dying minutes of the game as
Wang Di did his trademark sprint on the left hand side, only to see
his cross inches away from Clement’s boot for a tap in. The
game ended 3 goals a piece for each team. As Benedetto continue their
quest to establish themselves in the AFL, may we continue improving
as a unit and encourage each other through every ups and downs we
might face in future. Onwards Benedetto! _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Things started to look gloomy for The Blessed
Ones going into their 4th game as it started to rain just as warm
up was about to begin. Everyone was scurrying for shelter to avoid
having their bags getting all wet. As quickly as the rain came, it
left in the same manner, and tactics were being laid out for the guys
to take on the team that held last season’s champions to a 2-2
draw.
The game got underway with Warriors dominating the game and constantly
putting Benedetto defense under pressure with their fluent passing
and dangerous passes to pick out their strikers sneaking in behind
the defenders. The deadlock was finally broken when a long ball placed
in between the centre back and keeper was smashed home with a brilliant
first time volley into the top right hand corner. Benedetto were not
about to hand the game on a silver platter and fought back valiantly
with strong teamwork and relentless hassling at every inch of the
field. Newcomer Desmond was shaky at the start but undying perseverance
and hassling gave the opponents no chance of dwelling on the ball
in a bid to slow the game down. The Blessed Ones were finally rewarded
with a stunning strike from Vishal, it was the tightest of angles
but he still managed to get it into the top right hand corner leaving
the keeper grasping air. 1-1 was the half time result and much to
be done.
Benedetto went into the second half looking to push for victory with
passion and fire. Warriors continued their samba football waiting
to pounce on any mistake made but Benedetto’s defense. A long
curving cross was played on from the right wing into the Benedetto
penalty box deceiving the defense and Dover’s no. 18 ran in
from deep to place a header past the keeper. 2-1 the score but heads
were kept up and the fight continued. Frustrations set in both teams
as the ref was making disputable decisions on both sides and tackles
started to get reckless. Our opponent got a yellow card for a dangerous
high leg tackle on Kah Yeu. Tempers were starting to flare as the
tight encounter continued. A long cross deep from Dover’s half
split the Benedetto’s defense with their striker blasting home
a powerful first time volley into the roof, leaving the keeper rooted
to the spot. However, Benedetto fought on and threw in wild card Wang
Di. Wang’s dazzling run straight into Warriors’ box caused
panic among their defenders leaving three of them flatfooted and falling
all over in a bid to block the ball but their keeper came to the rescue
with an acrobatic parry. The second time Wang ran down the left past
one midfielder, their left back and their two centre backs were left
on their backsides as the saw the ball placed past their keeper. 3-2,
GAME ON! Benedetto almost got their deserved equalizer in the dying
minutes when again Wang Di tormented their defense and laid the ball
to Vishal, only to see his shot sail agonizingly past the top left
corner.
All in all a tremendous match for both sides, enjoyed mostly by the
fans that turned up. Five spectacular goals worthy to be archived,
never giving up spirit shown by both sides. Eventually a winner emerged
and for Benedetto, it is back to the drawing board to work on future
games. It is still early in the league and much can achieved only
by those who believe and never give up. Forza Benedetto! _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Benedetto came into the match with only
one and one precise goal. A victory and nothing less. After last week’s
match every Benedetto player had established a common goal that the
next game has to be won. Jaemes might have played a part in “motivating”
the players that anything other than a win will cost them 6 rounds
or more of the pitch after the match. But deep down inside we all
knew that we needed to win for a just reward of our efforts so far.
Results counts, and nothing else.
Two minutes into the game and the first person to make a major impact
on the game was not’t a player from Benedetto or Bishannite.
It was the referee who responded to Josiah by saying ‘I don’t
like players shouting Ref!’ ‘I got the whistle I know
what to do’. That was enough to give most of us the impression
that we had a no nonsense referee and the match was in good hands,
or so we thought. The first half possessions were equally shared by
both teams. Benedetto’s first goal came when Elvin received
a pass from one of the midfielders. Elvin was not able to do much
as he had two defenders around him at the time, but what he did was
made a visionary through ball in-between them to Wang. With Wang getting
the ball to his feet he made the most out of it and fired the ball
through the net. 1-0 to Benedetto. The game then had little signs
of tensions building up from Bishannite but it was not too obvious
as they were still focused on getting an equalizer. Goal number two,
a shot from James at the goal when Bishannite scrambled to clear a
corner. The cheers from the Benedetto bench grew louder when they
realized it was our beloved James who did it again. The third goal
of the game also came in the 1st half when a ball came off a Bishannite
player like a fountain into the Benedetto goal. Aaron was totally
surprised it had gone in just under the bar.
The second half was when the tensions started boiling up from the
Bishannite. The referee had also a part to play in this as he was
shy in pulling out his “golden cards”. The Bishannite
got away with a couple of fouls and so did we; even when Wang was
brought down from behind in the penalty box. No red card, not even
a yellow for the opponent. Wang took the penalty. 3-1 to Benedetto.
Major impact no.2, you guessed it. Referee says ‘No using the
word f**k! Even among yourselves. It’s a bookable offence!’
Bryan echoed the message to the rest. Soon after that Wang got his
second penalty of the day as tackles were now getting even harder.
The keeper went the right way this time round though, diving down
to his left to block Wang’s kick. He made a second save from
the rebound too. Major impact no.3, this time it was from the Bishannite
captain. He elbowed David in the face, David's speed must have made
him really irritable. The referee at last brought out his red card.
The incident did not end there, one or two players from the opposition
tried to make more out of it by retaliating. But we were not about
to walk into their trap and all we wanted was to get on with the game
in the most professional way. The game then continued with Benedetto’s
tensions now rising, most notably Wei Liang, flying into tackles like
an arrogant chef serving his trademark dishes. He was substituted
as we already had the game wrapped up and his presence in the next
game would be crucial. The last goal of the game came in the dying
minutes from a weak but well placed shot from Noel as he was being
fouled by two defenders. He was seen screaming at the referee for
a foul as the ball was rolling into the goal; follow by a smile when
he realized the referee played the advantage.
In end the end both teams shook hands and respected each other’s
effort. The referee could have done a better job in controlling the
game if his actions and decisions were as tough as his words. We at
Benedetto here will all be hoping for a more pleasant encounter with
the Bishannite the next time around. Cheers, Onwards Benedetto!

It was the time to forget the result of
the first match and to show the Amateur Football League (AFL) what
Benedetto FC was made of. As mentioned by Napoleon, “Victory
belongs to the most persevering.” Benedetto was unfazed by how
the opponent Sims Brigade carried themselves, with nationalities ranging
from Eurasian to Koreans to Singaporeans. It looked like a team filled
with international talent.
Right from kick off, Benedetto stamped their authority on the opponents.
Tackles were flying everywhere where we were trying hard to contain
our opponents and spread play. John, Bryan and Wei Jun were working
their socks off to control possession and Wang Di and Noel were plying
their trade down the opponent’s flanks, trying to gain a foothold
of the game with good services to David. We were given a few scares
with most of their attack play coming from the left flank and balls
passed to their Eurasian right midfielder. Their attacks were short
and swift, however, our defence were rock solid trying to deny our
opponent opportunities. Then came the magical moment when a loose
ball was send into the path of David. David ran at least one third
of the field and had a clear view of goal. The whole bench was standing
up and cheering for him, however, his shot was well above the goal
post. In came Wen Hao for David and he was doing a hell of a job as
the lone striker after much waking up by his own team members. Wang
Di finally gave everyone something to cheer when he pick up a loose
ball from the middle of the park, like a slithering snake, he beat
a midfielder, beat one more defender, left one more defender flat
footed with his bum on the ground and placed a magnificent shot down
the right corner of the ground. The satisfaction on his face could
not have been better described with everyone cheering for him.
During the half time talk, everyone was ever determined, not trying
to get the one goal lead get into our heads. With fresh legs of Yash
and Elvin going into the play, Benedetto was trying to extend its
lead. However, came the most unfortunate incident. Josiah’s
clearance was deflected by the referee for a corner. Loose marking
with opponents swarming into our penalty, the corner was sent in,
headed back into the danger area and the Eurasian gladly accepted
the gift by reacting the fastest and scooping the ball into the unguarded
net. When the goal was scored, everyone’s heads were sulking,
but the fight was not over, Benedetto did not stop fighting. Noel,
David and Kah Yeu were sent in for our tired warriors to give more
bite upfront. Wang Di nearly scored again when a delicate ball was
chipped into his path by David. However, the shot was too soft and
it was cleared of the line. This gave Benedetto the determination
to fight on. Wang Di ran down the left flank again, cut into the penalty
box, however a defender was frantically frailing his hands and lightly
tapped the ball away. Never have I seen a weird decision by the referee
to give an advantage when clearly Wang Di was shouting at him for
a penalty. Frustration were there to be seen were tackles start flying
in and that was the last straw when Wei Liang decided to lunge into
the midfielder, getting his legs as well. The final whistle was blown
soon after. The performance and formation was there to be seen what
Benedetto could do, but the fight and perseverance were not enough
by our high standards. Lets start getting results. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Recalled

Being the first match for Benedetto in
the Amateur Football League(AFL), morale and team spirit was high
but at the same time several of us were feeling nervous. Our first
match was against Team Inpulse, making it a battle between the two
youngest teams in the league. And it showed in the first half as both
sides were full of endeavor, passion and running. Benedetto started
with our usual 4-5-1 formation.
The first half was a tight affair, with both defenses coming out tops,
limiting the number of chances created for either side. Aaron was
hardly tested. The muddy pitch also prevented us from playing our
usual short passing game. At half time we switched to the 4-4-2 formation,
going for the win. The game opened up in the 2nd half with both sides
going for the win and we had a few good chances but our attackers
were unable to convert those chances. Wei Jun, Clement and Wang Di
all coming close to breaking the deadlock. At the other end, Aaron
looked solid, claiming crosses and making a brilliant tip over to
deny the opposition. As the match wore on with both sides tiring and
the match seemingly heading for a draw, Team Inpulse scored from an
in swinging free kick with about 5 minutes to go.
Benedetto went all out in search for the equalizer but a few minutes
later the final whistle was blown. A 1-0 defeat in our first match
in AFL but we gave a decent showing of ourselves and hope to progress
to better performances in the upcoming matches. Onwards Benedetto!
